You’ve noticed the signs—sagging sections, water pouring over the edges, staining on your siding. Your gutters need replacing. Now comes the practical question: what’s this actually going to involve?

If you’re a homeowner in Mill Creek, Everett, Bothell, or elsewhere in Snohomish County, here’s a straightforward guide to what gutter replacement looks like—from first call to finished installation.

How Long Does Gutter Replacement Take?

For most homes, gutter replacement is a one-day job.

A typical single-story home with standard gutter runs can be completed in 4-6 hours. Two-story homes or those with complex rooflines take longer—usually a full day. Larger homes or those needing significant fascia repair might extend into a second day, but that’s the exception rather than the rule.

This assumes materials are on-site and ready to go. The timeline from “I want new gutters” to “gutters installed” includes a few additional steps:

Assessment and bid: We visit your home, evaluate the current gutters and fascia condition, measure everything, and provide a detailed bid. This typically happens within a few days of your call.

Scheduling: Once you approve the bid, we schedule the installation. During peak season (fall and early winter), this might be 1-2 weeks out. During slower periods, we can often get to you sooner.

Installation day: We show up, remove old gutters, address any fascia issues, install new gutters, and clean up. By the end of the day, you have a functioning gutter system ready for the next rainstorm.

What Affects the Cost of Gutter Replacement?

Gutter replacement costs vary based on several factors specific to your home. Rather than quoting a generic price range that may not apply to your situation, here’s what actually drives the numbers:

Linear footage. The total length of gutters needed is the primary cost driver. A small rambler needs less material than a large two-story colonial. We measure precisely during the assessment—no guessing.

Gutter size and style. Standard 5-inch K-style gutters work for most homes. Homes with large roof areas or steep pitches may need 6-inch gutters to handle water volume. Half-round gutters (common on historic or craftsman-style homes in older Snohomish neighborhoods) cost more than K-style.

Material. Aluminum is the standard choice for most Snohomish County homes—durable, rust-resistant, and cost-effective. Copper gutters are beautiful and long-lasting but significantly more expensive. Steel is strong but prone to rust in our wet climate. We typically recommend aluminum for the best balance of performance and value.

Number of downspouts. Each downspout adds material and labor. Proper drainage typically requires one downspout for every 30-40 feet of gutter run. Skimping on downspouts to save money leads to overflow problems.

Fascia condition. This is where costs can increase unexpectedly if you’re not working with someone who assesses thoroughly upfront. If the fascia board behind your gutters is rotted or damaged, it needs to be repaired or replaced before new gutters go up. Hanging new gutters on failing fascia is a waste of money—they’ll pull away within a year or two.

Accessibility. A single-story home with clear access is straightforward. A three-story home, steep lot, or gutters blocked by landscaping requires more setup time and sometimes specialized equipment.

Removal and disposal. Taking down old gutters and hauling them away is typically included in a professional installation, but it’s worth confirming.

Why We Don’t Quote Prices Online

You’ll notice we haven’t given you a dollar figure. That’s intentional.

Online price ranges are either so broad they’re useless (“$1,000 to $5,000”) or so specific they set wrong expectations. Every home in Lake Stevens is different from every home in Bothell. A 1960s rambler has different needs than a 2010 craftsman. Your neighbor’s quote doesn’t tell you what yours will be.

What we can tell you: a proper assessment takes about 30 minutes, and you’ll have a detailed bid within a few days. That bid will break down exactly what you’re paying for—linear feet of gutter, number of downspouts, any fascia work, materials, and labor. No surprises, no vague line items.

What Happens on Installation Day

Knowing what to expect makes the process smoother. Here’s how a typical gutter replacement day unfolds:

Morning: Setup and removal. We arrive, set up ladders and equipment, and carefully remove your old gutters. We inspect the fascia as we go, confirming whether the assessment findings match what we see once gutters are off. If there’s unexpected damage, we’ll discuss it with you before proceeding.

Mid-day: Fascia repair (if needed). Any damaged fascia gets replaced with quality lumber that will hold fasteners securely for decades. This step is critical and shouldn’t be skipped. We also check the drip edge and make adjustments if needed to ensure water flows into the new gutters properly.

Afternoon: New gutter installation. Seamless gutters are cut on-site to the exact lengths needed—no seams means fewer leak points. We install with hidden hangers for a clean appearance and secure hold. Each run is sloped correctly toward downspouts (about ¼ inch per 10 feet) so water drains completely.

Final steps: Downspouts and cleanup. Downspouts are positioned to direct water away from your foundation—ideally 4-6 feet out, or connected to underground drainage if you have it. We clean up all debris, haul away old materials, and walk you through the completed installation.

Seamless vs. Sectional Gutters

If you’re getting quotes, you might see different approaches. Here’s the difference:

Sectional gutters come in pre-cut pieces (usually 10-20 feet) that are joined together on-site. They’re available at home improvement stores for DIY installation. The problem: every seam is a potential leak point. Over time, sealant fails, and seams separate.

Seamless gutters are formed on-site from continuous coils of aluminum, custom-cut to the exact length of each run. No seams along the runs means dramatically fewer leak points. The only joints are at corners and downspout connections.

We install seamless aluminum gutters because they last longer and perform better—especially in Snohomish County’s wet climate where gutters work hard nine months of the year.

Questions to Ask Any Gutter Contractor

Whether you call us or someone else, ask these questions to make sure you’re getting quality work:

“Will you inspect the fascia before quoting, and is fascia repair included if needed?” A quote that doesn’t account for fascia condition is incomplete.

“Are you installing seamless or sectional gutters?” Seamless costs slightly more but lasts significantly longer.

“What size gutters do you recommend for my roof?” The answer should be based on your specific roof area and pitch, not a one-size-fits-all default.

“How many downspouts will be installed, and where?” Proper drainage requires adequate downspouts positioned to move water away from your foundation.

“Is removal and cleanup included?” It should be. You shouldn’t have old gutters sitting in your yard after the crew leaves.

When to Schedule Gutter Replacement

Gutters can be replaced year-round, but timing matters for scheduling and convenience:

Late summer/early fall is ideal. The weather is dry for installation, and your new gutters will be ready before the heavy rains arrive. This is also peak season, so scheduling fills up—plan ahead if possible.

Winter installations are possible between storms. If your gutters are failing now and causing damage, waiting until spring doesn’t make sense. We work around weather and can often find dry windows to get the job done.

Spring is a good time to address gutters before summer projects take priority. You’ll also see clearly how your gutters performed (or didn’t) through the winter.
